Name/Version: BIC Metadata Form
Reviewer / Date: Hugh Phillips / December 2000
Function: CSDGM metadata creation tool
See it in Action! (not any more)
Platform:
Client: any system with a form supporting Web browser
Server: any Web server with cgi-bin capabilities
Principal Contact: Miguel Pavon, Texas/Mexico Borderlands Information Center (BIC), Miguel.Pavon@twdb.state.tx.us
Date of last known release: 2000?
Status:
The BIC service was down as of about January 2002. According to Mr. Pavon, their implementation described here was on a UNIX based system. They have switched to an NT server and are awaiting modification of the cgi scripts until issues related to ISO metadata specifications have settled down. The original scripts are available if you ask nicely.
Metadata Storage Structure: Discrete (on server)
Brief Description:
The BIC Metadata Form is a Web form based means to submit metadata to a Clearinghouse. It contains many more of the possible metadata elements than the Metadata Entry System, approaching what was possible with the Metamorph prototype. The user fills in this form, aided by check boxes, pick lists, text entry boxes and element definitions. Differentiation between the mandatory, mandatory if applicable, and optional elements is afforded by color coding the elements with the scheme of Susan Stitt's metadata graphics.

After the form is submitted through a Web browser, a CGI script on the server end parses the submittal into a text file which can be processed with cns and mp and placed on a Clearinghouse. After metadata is received, acknowledgement is returned to the submitter, and email is sent to the Clearinghouse operator.

The form contains some elements which are not part of the CSDGM and is limited in its ability to handle metadata elements (such as citations or attributes) that can repeat.
Cost: None (probably)
Notable Plus:
Notable Minus:
The system as implemented is only suitable for a one-time submission of metadata. If it is ever necessary to modify submitted metadata, the user has no way to recall it into the form for editing.
