Name/Version Reviewed: DOCUMENT.AML 7.0.4 Beta
Reviewer: Hugh Phillips
Date (Version) of last known release: 10/24/98 (7.2.1 )
Other relevant information and tips:
1/1/00 document.aml should now be considered obsolete. ArcInfo 8+ now comes with the much better ArcCatalog metadata tool.
10/24/98 Peter Schweitzer has put together some helpful advice for metadata creators still using document.aml...
10/24/98 Version 7.2.1 of DOCUMENT.AML, compatible with Arc/Info v.7.0.4, v.7.1.1, v.7.1.2, v.7.2.1, and v.7.1 (NT) is available from: http://www.esri.com/software/arcinfo/docaml721.html (URL broken 12/17/2004). Its file output is reputed to pass mp. ESRI is working on other metadata tools which are expected to replace DOCUMENT.AML.
1997 Daniel O. Nelson, Robert J. Krumm, Sally L. Denhart, and Sheena K. Beaverson of Illinois State Geological Survey reviewed and commented on DOCUMENT.AML in a 1997 ESRI Users Conference paper, "Arc/Info Solutions to Metadata Problems: Building a Solid NSDI Clearinghouse Node on a Shifting Metadata Landscape"
Function: Intelligent CSDGM metadata entry tool for Arc/Info

The AML was furnished with ArcInfo version 7.0 and 7.1 software, so your last good bet is to find someone with those old software CDs.

Description:
The Document.AML (Arc Macro Language) tool is a metadata documentation utility to be used with UNIX versions of Arc/Info. It was originally developed by the USGS and the US Environmental Protection Agency and was adopted by ESRI for incorporation into Arc/Info version 7. When Document is applied to an Arc/Info coverage it extracts some of the metadata information (e.g. Point and Vector Object Information, attributes) automatically which cuts down the time and effort required to carry out the documentation. It has an on-line help feature. It was developed prior to the 1994 version of the Content Standards and reflected its heritage with input and output elements which do not correspond to the June 8, 1994 CSDGM. Additionally, the output reports produced by Document had irregular formatting and a considerable amount of work still remained to bring it to a form which would pass Peter Schweitzer's metadata compiler (mp). This led to development of tools like Data Dictionary and BLMDOC.AML. A recent anouncement from USGS explains improvements over these earlier versions of DOCUMENT.AML which include a FILE option output that is close to 100% compliant to the CSDGM, modifications to ensure that no metadata is lost in the HTML option output, and several other AML coding enhancements. An administrative feature of this tool allows contact and distribution information to be entered which will then be available to be attached to the metadata for any specific data set.
Cost: none
Notable Plus:
Notable Minus:
Unfortunately, it appears this latest fix did not address some of the problems holding over from earlier versions: text entry fields are often too short to allow effective description and a number of field names do not correspond to the current (June 8, 1994) version of the CSDGM.
