- Principal Contact: Doug Nebert
- Status: Functional, general release

- Description:
- The operative package consists of some Perl cgi scripts to accept Web form based metadata entry, convert these metadata to SGML, and index them for Isite. It is sort of like the BIC Metadata Entry Form or Metamorph on diet plans. The tool was written by Doug Nebert of the USGS. Its description and the script package is available here. In name, it is a bit of a chameleon: on the FGDC tool survey page it is referred to as the 'Metadata Entry System;' on the installation directions page, it refers to ' metalite;' but in the end it looks like MDES (MetaData Entry System?) is the most current acronym.
