Findarc is utility that helps locate and document Arc/Info and ArcView coverages, GRIDs, shapefiles, projects, and workspaces. It searches the current default file system or directory for Arc/Info and ArcView data to identify file owners, state of topology, and projection information. The output is a comma delimited file which is easily imported into ArcView for sorting and querying, or filtered with UNIX tools like grep. The information obtained about coverages with this tool is the same that can be found with the Arc/Info 'DESCRIBE' command.
As it exists currently, Findarc is an exceptional metadata utility, however it stops short of what one might hope for in such tool. If it went a little further, and did some statistics on the attributes, it might guess range, codeset, and unrepresentable domain for attributes and report them.
