The latest release adds extensive new functionality, especially in the area of metadata. Since the extension has now been released as a free shareware product, it is available to the entire remaining ArcView 3.x user community and those organizations using both ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS. Nieuwland has also redesigned it's main website. Please visit our new site http://www.nieuwland.nl to download the latest release and view extensive product information including screenshots. Theme Browser 3.1 can be found in the "Producten\GIS" section. ABOUT THEME BROWSER: Theme Browser is an "ArcCatalog" like extension for ArcView 3.2 or higher. It mimics most of ArcCatalogs functions in a user friendly dialog designer interface. In addition, Theme Browser has extensive support for viewing and data-mining metadata in several formats. Version 3.1 adds even more functions - see the list entirely below - including more interoperability between ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS by supporting browsing and launching of several ArcGIS formats from within the ArcView 3.x environment (E.g it is now possible to search for an ArcMap document, view its metadata file, and to launch ArcMap from within ArcView3.x). Best regards, Marco Boeringa boeringa@nieuwland.nl Nieuwland Automatisering The Netherlands NEW FEATURES: There are a number of very exciting new features in release 3.1: - Theme Browser 3.1 supports keyword searches on 6(!) metadata standards: * FGDC * ISO 19115 XML metadata as implemented in ArcCatalog * ISO 19139 v1.0 (actually there are currently no applications producing this kind of metadata, this is supported for future compatibility) * European CEN XML metadata * Australian ANZLIC metadata * Dublin core XML metadata - The Metadata Explorer now adds the Purpose, Metadata Standard and Metadata Version elements to its direct metadata viewing capabilities, while of course still offering the option to view full metadata using XSL stylesheets. - Theme Browser now implements NBII metadata keyword searches and ISO topic category searches. - Theme Browser now allows for the creation of a third type of catalogs: Global Catalogs Global catalogs use a datasets metadata file to determine the extent or spatial domain of a dataset. Contrary to Standard catalogs, that simply use a datasets minimum bounding rectangle in whatever coordinate system the dataset has been stored, a Global catalog uses the decimal degrees bounding coordinates as stored in the metadata file associated with a geographic dataset. For FGDC style XML metadata the elements used are "westbc", "eastbc", "northbc" and "southbc". Equivalent elements are used for other metadata standards. By using the decimal degrees extent as stored in the metadata, the catalog accurately represent the global position of each and every datasets, irrespective of the actual coordinate system used to store the dataset. This allows you to get a truly "global" overview of the location of datasets. - Theme Browser now supports the usage of the double quote character (") for delimiting keywords consisting of multiple words. E.g. "Diomedea nigripes" which is Latin for the black-footed albatross, will result in a keyword search being performed on the entire string between the double quotes. - Catalog Browser now supports both "Select Tiles Intersecting" and "Select Tiles Completely Within" when spatially selecting datasets stored in a catalog. - You can now search and display a whole range of non-GIS file types. E.g. it is now possible to search for PDF documents and launch Adobe Acrobat to read them, or you can search and launch ArcMap using an ArcMap document from within Theme Browser. This also means that you can now find directory based XML metadata - metadata that is not associated with a geographic dataset. The list of file types is extendable by editing an XML file. _______________________________________________ metadata mailing list metadata@lists.geocomm.com http://lists.geocomm.com/mailman/listinfo/metadata
