This placid image belies the series of violent events that led to the waterfall’s creation. The story begins over a billion years ago, when a rip in the continent caused lava to pour across the land surface. This rock layer was eventually buried beneath layers of sediment. An ancient fault shoved the ground skyward, exposing the hard volcanic rocks that now serve as the backdrop for the waterfall.
