Under the supervision of the Director of Public Works, the GIS Specialist is responsible for the planning, organizing, and ensuring the day to day duties and operations of the GIS area is carried out. This position is responsible for a wide variety of routine to complex technical functions including the design, analysis, systems integration, development, implementation, coordination, maintenance and support of the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) functions. Work is independently achieved with minimal review for accuracy and adherence to established procedure by the Director of Public Works. Performs work in core areas with little or no guidance.

Essential Job Functions:

• Directs, designs, implements and maintains all aspects of the City’s GIS. Act as the technical expert for the GIS system including ESRI products, database administration, mapping, web applications, asset management, addressing and scripting languages. Assist with Information Technology projects as needed.

• Provide technical support, assistance and training for the City GIS system; educates City staff on the capabilities and utilization of the system.

• Manages and coordinates the implementation and development of the City’s asset management, including system integration, data development and collection.

• Assists Director of Public Works in compiling City GIS projects for inclusion into City operating, equipment or Capital Improvements budget.

• Supervises and evaluates part-time, and temporary/seasonal staff. Establishes work schedule and assigns tasks to be performed. Assesses, coordinates and/or provides training of staff at the appropriate levels; conducts staff and program meetings. Assists in interviewing and hiring of part time and temporary/seasonal staff.

Requirements of Work (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography or related, or equivalent experience required. A minimum of five (5) years of related GIS experience required. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
