The Pedestrian Bicycle Section of the Traffic Engineering Division within the Department of Transportation is looking to fill a part-time position that is a key part of making Madison one of the most bicycle and pedestrian friendly cities in the United States. The work involves direct responsibility for a range of specialized programs, projects and activities relating to the support of traffic engineering pedestrian and bicycle projects. In particular, this work involves management of pedestrian bicycle parking and other small infrastructure, assisting with gathering data and counts, assisting with pedestrian and bicycle wayfinding and other signage, and managing bike and pedestrian map creation. The position includes both field and office tasks including preparing plans for bike parking, pedestrian flags repair stations, signs and markings. This position will assist with review of proposed bikeshare stations and coordination with other impacted departments. The work also includes data gathering, working with count data, creating maps, updating website materials, and creating visuals for presentations and reports. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Pedestrian Bicycle Administrator.
This is a 60% position working 23.25 hours per week.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee City bicycle parking and bicycle repair stations. This will include managing current parking locations, reviewing requests for new bike parking, determining placement of new parking and creating installation plans. Maintain data on bike parking in the public right-of-way.
- Coordinate placement of micromobility, such as bikeshare station infrastructure in collaboration with service providers and City staff in other departments.
- Coordinate the Pedestrian Flag program. Approve requests for new locations, develop installation plans and work with community partners.
- Assist with development of bicycle and pedestrian wayfinding plans and sign design. Monitor wayfinding signs and map kiosks for needed updates. Coordinate placement of new maps and kiosks.
- Develop other bicycle and pedestrian signing and marking plans, such as Share the Path signs, crosswalks, and bicycle/pedestrian detour routes.
- Participate in transportation studies and project planning by gathering data, assisting with collecting feedback, and creating visuals for presentations and reports.
- Assist with improvement requests and gathering data to prioritize projects for programs, such as Safe Streets Madison.
- Assist in the creation of walking maps, bike maps and other public information maps. Manage design, printing and distribution as needed.
- Work with other City staff to ensure online pedestrian and bicycle facility data is updated regularly.
- Assist with website updates.
- Assist in the collection and dissemination of information related to bicycle and pedestrian counts.
- Perform general office functions related to the Pedestrian Bicycle Program, including updating forms, responding to inquiries from the public and other city staff, and assisting with entering information in Computerized Maintenance & Management System (CMMS) software.
- Update Traffic Engineering Pedestrian and Bicycle datasets using City GIS/CADD software.
Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience performing technical office and/or field work in support of engineering activities.
- Vocational school or college training in the area of civil engineering technology or a closely related area may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience.

Two years experience in applying the following:
- Computer software applicable to the duties of the position, including Microsoft Office products and familiarity with CAD and GIS software.
