We are looking for a experienced programmer to (1) create a simple user interface for driving an existing simulation model, and (2) to link model outputs so that they are visible in real time in ArcGIS, a visualization platform for geographic data that allows users to make maps and analyze results. The interface between the model results and the visualization tool is a platform called ArcObjects, the new standard in computer mapping. Working with ArcObjects is a highly sought-after skill outside the academic world, making this position ideal for a student or LTE who is hoping to gain employability on campus and elsewhere. Given our hopes of extending this project and skills from this on-campus job into the future, we see this job as perfect for a motivated freshman or sophomore.

We’re seeking a self-motivated, self-reliant student for 15-20 hours per week who can (a) rapidly understand the mechanics, inputs, and outputs of the simulation model, through testing it and reading the code; (b) devise the appropriate link between ArcGIS and the model results; (c) develop, test, and demonstrate the interface code in a series of increasingly sophisticated steps, rather than produce a single major deliverable at the end of the semester; and (e) have fun. Fluency in one or more of Java, Visual Basic, VBA, Python, C++, C#, or COM is essential, and we ask you to read a bit about ArcObjects, and provide and explain a working program that you’ve coded prior to an interview. Note that experience in ArcGIS is not essential or expected; there are tutorials and books that can explain most of what a motivated student needs to know. There may well be an opportunity to add hours in the summer, including possible continuation in the fall of 2005 and beyond. We’re seeking to fill this position as soon as possible for the spring semester.
