GIS Technician

Vilas County is now accepting applications for a full-time Geographic Information System Technician.

Purpose of Position: The GIS Technician is responsible for assisting in the development, maintenance, coordination, and support of the County’s Geographic/Land Information System (GIS/LIS) to advance the goals of the County’s land records modernization plan. All duties and responsibilities are performed under and subject to the review and guidance of the Land Records Committee.

Knowledge and Skills Required: Knowledge of GIS/LIS with emphasis on land records, data conversion, and supported databases. Knowledge and experience with AML, Macros, or other object-oriented programming skills. Knowledge of Windows NT/Windows2000 environment. Knowledge and ability to use computer hardware and software related to GIS/LIS including ARC/INFO, ARCView, AutoCAD, and Access. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the public, other departments, GIS users, and other support staff. Ability to analyze land information data and to advise others on the use of the County’s GIS. Familiarity with networking, software/hardware configurations, and cabling. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals, percents, use statistics, algebra, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry.

Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in GIS or geography, natural resources, land use planning, or related field incorporating GIS studies in their curriculum, or two (2) year associate degree with three years experience in the above areas, or seven (7) years direct work experience in GIS or related field.

Starting rate will be $16.11 per hour plus excellent benefits. After a successful probation rate increases to $16.96 per hour. Please note: Interested individuals are required to provide a digital GIS portfolio on a cd in addition to the written application and resume. The cd will be reviewed to determine the candidates capabilities with the software used in the Land Records & Mapping and Surveyor’s Offices. The following items to be included on the cd:

• Metadata document explaining production details of the required files listed below.
• AutoCAD drawing in either a .dwg or .dxf file. Please identify the version of AutoCAD used to produce the drawing.
• ArcView project in a .pdf, .jpeg, .tif, .bmp format.
• ArcMap project in a .pdf, .jpeg, .tif, .bmp format.
• Any other projects that are Land Records related, or demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills required for the GIS Technician position.
