Earth Tech, Inc., an international consulting firm and a leader in water resources, is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist for our Milwaukee, WI office. We are looking for an individual to support and manage multiple GIS projects and tasks. The GIS Specialist will act as a primary support person for an array of projects within general guidelines and standards from Earth Tech’s diverse professions and clients.

Depending on the nature of the projects under contract, specific duties may include:

  • Create thematic maps using ESRI software.
  • Define and re-project coordinate information, understanding county coordinate systems, survey data, and map scales.
  • Gather, analyze and integrate spatial data from clients and project managers to determine how best the information can be displayed.
  • Compile spatial data from a variety of sources which may include censuses, GPS, field observations, aerial photographs, USGS topographic maps, and other existing data.
  • Establish relationships with region-wide GIS staff to research, locate and obtain existing digital data.
  • Prepare geographic statistics for project managers to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Create and update map data through the use of heads-up digitizing or by direct input.
  • Implement geodatabase design concepts in order to more accurately and descriptively represent spatial features.
  • Create and establish geodatabase relationships using topology, domain values, subtypes and other geodatabase tools.
  • Establish metadata and other documentation for internal use and client data transfers.
  • Meet with project managers to perform needs assessments and to develop project requirements, required outputs, or applications.
  • Move, copy, delete, and add files, drawings and maps to output reports in hard copy or electronic transfer.
  • Present information to users and answer questions.
  • Document work flow process and procedures for special projects.

While not required, the ability to provide support, as needed, on 3D analyses of geometric networks, watershed analyses, stormwater utilities, and/or needs assessments will be viewed favorably.

In addition to GIS experience, a background in natural resources is considered a plus. This background might include education and/or experience in one or more of the following areas: ecological restoration, stream corridor restoration, wetland delineation, site investigation, field data collection and site/habitat assessment.

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: GIS, Geography, Information Systems or a related field from an accredited university. Two to five years of successful experience in full GIS life-cycle development are preferred. Must be familiar with current versions of ESRI GIS products (ArcGIS.x). Additional skills desired but not required include ArcObjects programming and relational database systems (SQL or Oracle) and AutoCad Map. The successful candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong multi-tasking abilities, time management skills, the ability to recognize and resolve complex project issues, and the ability to work independently. This position must hold customer service in high regard and be willing to interact with other GIS users. Experience with GIS application and development for engineering, environmental and planning applications and knowledge of ESRI’s Enterprise-Geodatabase are preferred.
