This position will conduct assessments and suveillance of plant pest conditions pertaining to new or emerging insect infestations or threats (e.g., Emerald Ash Borer, Asian longhorned beetle, etc.).
Job Duties: This professional position maintains responsibilities in the Bureau of Plant Industry; Plant Survey & Control Section. Working with the program coordinator for new and emerging plant pest issues, the position will develop methodologies to track the movement of plant pests and participate in the administration of programs to monitor control or eradicate the pests. Will conduct site assessments, serve as a key technical and media contact in the event of positive pest identification, and implement response plans with the program coordinator. Position will spend a significant amount of time developing information for issuance to various media entities, local government, industry, and the general public. This position must ensure that technical information is conveyed in a systematic manner and is easily understood by the public. This position will participate in and conduct training to inform a variety of parties on best practices to prevent, control or eradicate plant pests emerging in Wisconsin.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the plant sciences, preferably with a background in entomology, forestry or horticulture. Knowledge of Wisconsin pest life cycles, hosts, distribution and management alternatives. Basic knowledge of cartographic design and map production. Knowledge of mapping, surveying, and positioning (GPS). Well versed in the use of multiple computer programs including PowerPoint, spreadsheets and data bases and equipment that interfaces with computers including data collection equipment, digital cameras, hand held computers and other communication equipment. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including effective networking and liaison skills. Knowledge of effective training skills, team leadership practices and meeting facilitation techniques.
