This is a renewable 50% appointment.

Principal Duties:
60% Web communications managementA. Research and implement new web technologies to support SCO outreach communications.
B. Assist in the development and maintenance of SCO-maintained Web sites
C. Assist in maintaining the SCO’s open source web content management system.
D. Work with other SCO staff to update web content as needed.
E. Document internal policies and procedures.
F. Train student staff to perform selected web page revision and maintenance tasks.

30% Community building and outreach
A. Present at conferences and meetings to promote online collaboration tools
B. Develop workshops and online training materials as appropriate
C. Scheduling, organize and document meetings in support of statewide coordination activities supported by the SCO.

10% Other duties as assigned
A. Write content for technical publications and short articles for the Wisconsin Mapping Bulletin
B. Assist with general office outreach functions at conferences and workshops
C. Participate in departmental and campus committees

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
The Wisconsin State Cartographer’s Office, a unit administered by the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a qualified individual to develop and maintain a diverse set of online information resources in support of the Office’s ongoing outreach mission. This includes both technical and non-technical aspects of developing online communication tools to foster improved coordination within the Wisconsin geospatial community.

The SCO, with a statutory mission of outreach, clearinghouse, and coordination, gathers, maintains and disseminates information about mapping and geospatial activities in the state. It accomplishes and coordinates these duties through various means, including print and Web publications, presentations at conferences and workshops, and leadership and participation on statewide and local committees, taskforces, and consortia.

The ideal candidate will have a wide breadth of skills/abilities including at least four of the following qualifications:Possess understanding of the foundational principles of mapping and/or geographicinformation systems (GIS).

Ability to develop, maintain, and administer online communication tools (blogs, wikis,podcasting, web forums, etc.)

Significant involvement with committees, task forces, or councils in the geospatial industry.

Group facilitation skills.

Organizational skills as demonstrated through past projects.

Technical understanding of common web concepts (XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)

Experience with online multimedia development

Other desirable qualifications include:Experience working for an organization with an outreach or educational mission.Prior exposure to commercial or Open Source web content management systems.Previous web programming experience (PHP, JSP, ASP, SQL, etc.).
