The State Cartographer’s Office, a unit of the UW-Madison Department of Geography, needs your help! Undergraduate, graduate, and professional/certificate students from any University of Wisconsin System campus are encouraged to apply.

Put simply, we need people to help us build stuff and figure out solutions to complicated problems. Your time will be spent working on JavaScript, CSS, Python, and/or SQL code development. You will have the opportunity to learn more about, and deepen your skills with, JavaScript, CSS, Carto, Mapbox, Git, Github, PostgreSQL, Leaflet, Python, ArcPY, and other related technologies. Successful candidates typically have some level of experience in one or more of these areas, but we don’t expect you to know it all!  Most of our students start out knowing the basics, and we give them room to grow their expertise.

What We Expect

We expect our students to work 10-15 hours per week. In return, we offer a very flexible schedule that can work around your classes, and yes, those occasional all-nighters. Up to 20 hours per week are possible during the summer and other breaks.

We expect you to be an active learner. We know you haven’t had a “real” job yet, so we get the fact that you need time to learn. We expect this… but we also expect you to take that responsibility seriously.

Due to the current pandemic, we these positions will work from a remote location until further notice. That means you will need access to a personal laptop or desktop computer, and a reliable Internet connection. We provide remote access to a SCO computer and the software to do your job.

Requirements

You MUST be a student enrolled at any University of Wisconsin System campus.  IMPORTANT: Strong preference is given to students who will graduate no sooner than December 2021.
