GIS Intern

Description

The primary objective of this position is to assist with gathering asset field data, maintain integrity of asset data, advance productive use of the City’s asset management program, inspecting public works maintenance activities, and other tasks under the direction of a Public Works Manager.

This position is open until filled. First review of applications will be Monday, December 21, 2020.

Essential Functions

• Collect data using GPS survey equipment and tablet.
• Create and edit spatial and non-spatial GIS data sets, perform analysis, data conversion, and maintain the integrity of data sets.
• Work with others to develop custom inspections, reports, and templates in the City’s asset management software.
• Produce layouts, charts, and figures in GIS as requested.
• Scan and index paper records/documents.
• Provide visual inspection outfalls and storm water ponds in the City’s asset management software (Cartegraph™).
• Assist with water quality monitoring and database management.
• Assist with survey work and construction staking.
• General administrative duties within the engineering department which may include; answering telephones, support at engineering counter, filing and organizing documents and other duties as assigned.
• Performs related work as apparent or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school degree or equivalent
• Currently enrolled in college or have recently completed a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as, geographic information systems, GIS, environmental science, water resources, civil engineering, construction management, or equivalent.
• A valid Class D Minnesota driver’s license and with a satisfactory driving record.

Desired Qualifications

• Previous experience with GIS software (ArcMap, ArcInfo, ArcView)
• Previous experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
• Previous experience with construction, interpreting construction plans, and reading as-builts.
