The Superior Bio-Conservancy (SBC) Is offering two internships to develop maps for a western Great Lakes landscape conservation project. This involves designing and creating maps of wildlife corridors that serve as linkages between large blocks of public land within the Laurentian Forest Province (North Woods) of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. These wildlife corridors encompass approximately 11,000 square miles of area. The purpose of these wildlife corridors is to promote genetic exchange, continued evolutionary processes and support biodiversity in this bio-region. The work involves creating interactive, graphically interesting maps and integrating numerous data sets. This will involve evaluating and establishing scale thresholds that will be used in building these maps. Some of the maps will need to have interactive features, that illustrate biodiversity values. The interactive maps will be utilized in animated video productions to illustrate conservation principles for education and advocacy.
Currently, SBC is working with a video producer to develop a video short film that illustrates “The Hydrology of Beaver Created Wetlands”. The candidate will work directly in the development of the graphics in this video production with the creator. Experience in video graphic design is a plus. These maps and videos will be hosted on our website for public viewing.
The candidate should have an understanding of and interest in natural history and using maps as tools to illustrate conservation concepts. The ideal candidate needs to have creative inventive instincts, fluid technical skills and the ability to build maps that communicate complex information. Candidates should be self-starters and capable of completing tasks in a timely manner.
This internship offers a flexible schedule with work-from-home options. The work commitment, may average approximately 6-8 hours per week with some expectation of flexibility if additional work is needed. We anticipate approximately 6 months of work, beginning in April, 2021 with the possibility of extension.
Candidates will be expected to participate in two, one-hour, pre-scheduled Zoom meetings for project purposes.
These positions may develop into paid positions.
