AASPIRE Intern – City of Madison IT Department

Description

You will work in the development and support of the City’s Fiber Management Software using the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS). Learn about how the City uses GIS to support City agencies that rely on the City Network. Learn how to use GIS to make business decisions on future investments in the fiber infrastructure. Recognize gaps of fiber availability and build fiber redundancy. Work with network operation tools to do discovery on network congestion points. In collaboration with the City’s Fiber Manager, make recommendations on aggregation point locations based off of network congestion and future fiber builds.

Work will include:

• Edit  existing GIS layers using GIS software.
• Edit data entry for various fiber-related layers.
• Assist with coordination between IT and Traffic Engineering (TE) on fiber-related information (IDs, drawings, and other information that both IT and TE need to keep track of.)
• Learn how to use GIS to make business decisions on future investments in the fiber infrastructure.
• Learn to recognize gaps of fiber availability and build fiber redundancy.
• Learn how to use Intermapper to do discovery on network congestion points.
• Attending fiber build site visits.
• Attending Application Development, Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network Operations, and Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network Oversight Committee meetings.
• Check-ins for current fiber builds with internal Information Technology Network Operations staff and Traffic Engineering Engineers.
