JOB DUTIES:
- Prepare scientific or technical reports and graphic presentations; and notices for meetings, reports, publications, and agenda packets for boards, commissions and committees.
- Obtain property information.
- Interact with customers, officials, staff, board and commission members and the general public.
- Assist in gathering information using geographic information systems (GIS) to prepare maps, graphics, and reports.
- Assist with preparation of memorandum, staff report, minutes, resolutions, ordinances; and maintenance of departmental websites.
- Maintain written and electronic records.
- Respond to questions and service requests.
- Participate in the city’s intercultural competency training program.
- Inform the public about policies, services, or procedures.
- Analyze impact of legal or regulatory changes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- City Planning – General knowledge of city planning principles, zoning, geography, and GIS and mapping methods for describing the features of land and the built environment.
- Customer and Personal Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Communications and Media – Ability to clearly communicate complex planning concepts and codes through a multitude of media such as email, electronic notification, phone, in-person, written reports, and geographic information systems (GIS).
- Active Listening and Learning – Listening to others, not interrupting, and asking good questions; and figuring out how to use new ideas.
- Critical Thinking and Complex Problem Solving – Noticing a problem, thinking about the pros and cons of different ways to solve a problem, and solving it.
- Judgment and Decision Making – Thinking about the pros and cons of different options and picking the best one.
- Systems Analysis and Evaluation – Figuring out and measuring how a system should work and how to improve it and how changes in the future will affect it.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of an Associate’s degree or major coursework from an accredited college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Urban Studies, or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with a diverse workforce.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within thirty (30) miles of the corporate limits of the city of Dubuque as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
