This is entry-level technical support work performed in a professional engineering and public works mapping and construction environment. The work involves performing field and office tasks such as: computer drafting of maps, drawings and layouts; updates to the City’s computerized record maps such as traffic signs, signals, condition diagrams and crash maps, including updates to the associated database tables; assisting in construction inspection and documentation, making field measurements, and performing other related tasks. The work is performed under the direct supervision of higher-level technical or professional staff and is reviewed in progress and upon completion.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Updating/Maintaining Traffic Engineering’s spatial asset databases, maps and records:
- Update and maintain the City’s computerized traffic assets and records.
- Update and maintain the City’s computerized corridor models.
- Update and maintain the City’s computerized crash maps and records.
- Research legal documents such as legal descriptions, highway right of way plans, plat maps, certified surveys and other legal documents.
Provide mapping and graphic products for City Traffic Engineering staff, other governmental agencies and the general public:
- Print maps of Traffic assets from CAD or GIS programs.
- Create maps/provide data for public meetings.
- Fulfill public record requests.
Assist in providing technical support and training to City Traffic staff relating to CAD hardware/software and GIS mapping hardware/software:
- Assist users with ESRI products.
- Assist users with AutoCad.
- Assist users with Cityworks.
- Train users on all new programs developed by or supported by the Traffic Engineering Data/Mapping section.
Perform field related duties as necessary in support of mapping and record conversion duties and other related work as assigned:
- Inventory existing signs for construction projects.
- Perform Site Distance Studies.
- Conduct traffic count studies.
- Collect field data as requested.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- One (1) year of college courses leading toward a degree in Geography, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems, Civil or Environmental Engineering or an equivalent degree.
OR
-
One (1) year of experience performing technical office and/or field work in support of engineering activities. Basic familiarity and experience with CAD/GIS data and software, land division terminology, database functionality, and geo-spatial principals.
Random selection may be used to determine who moves forward to interviews following a screening of minimum qualifications.
If an applicant does not possess the experience listed above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:
- Methods and techniques for inspecting public works construction projects.
Familiarity with the following:
- Drafting techniques, materials and tools, including basic familiarity with computer assisted drafting (CAD) and spatial mapping software (GIS).
- Standard engineering nomenclature and mathematics including geometry and trigonometry.
- Surveying techniques and equipment.
