Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
Duties will focus on gathering address and sub-address records such as blueprints, layout maps, or site plans, from various public and private parties to ensure those records are current and transferable to the NG911 GIS. The intern will expect to gain understanding of addressing systems, Next Generation 911, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and local government organization and resources.
Essential Duties
- Multi-Unit Dwelling (MUD) Mapping
One of Polk County’s primary goals is to map the sub-address locations for various multi-unit dwellings that only have one physical address. These places primarily include apartments, nursing homes, traditional single-family homes that have been divided into units, and twin homes, but may include campgrounds, camps, condos, mobile home parks, and resorts.
- Contact county municipalities to obtain a listing of all their multi-unit dwellings and compile available site plan records within their jurisdiction. The county zoning office may retain some of these records too.
- Coordinate the research, records request, collection, and transfer of multi-unit dwelling records to the county. Record collection at the municipality may be needed.
- If multi-unit dwelling records are incomplete at the municipality, records may need to be gathered from private sources by investigating and contacting various sources.
- Record document analysis will need to be completed to ensure the building site location is known, landmark/building name is known, floor location known, unit location and number is known, and any room names are known.
- Information gathering may need to be completed at the dwelling site to confirm the accuracy of the records that were collected or to ensure the horizontal accuracy of the sub-address locations by using GPS or other collection methods.
- Sub-addressing input into the county GIS will occur throughout the internship as records become available. The intern will perform various data entry methods. The GIS Coordinator may need to provide some basic GIS training.
- The final goal, in this section, is to take the various multi-unit records that were collected to format and index them for quick retrieval at the 911 communication center. Along with the address/sub-address GIS points, it is a goal to have a digital multi-unit dwelling layout that can be shared and/or quickly printed.
Secondary Duties
- Critical Facilities Mapping
One of Polk County’s secondary goals is to map the sub-address locations for various critical facilities as defined by the Polk County Emergency Management Office. These high-density occupancy places include but may not be limited to educational facilities, government buildings, shopping centers, office buildings, places-of-worship, and hotels/motels. If section A of this outline happens to be completed during the internship, the intern will transition to section B. Participation by private owners may be voluntary.
