Summary of La Crosse County Zoning, Planning and Land Information Department Intern Position:

The La Crosse County Zoning, Planning, and Land Information Department is currently seeking a GIS intern to support GIS data compilation, automation, and web development efforts. The intern will report to the Zoning, Planning, and Land Information Administrator and will work closely with the GIS Coordinator and GIS Specialists on various tasks to ensure the County’s enterprise GIS contains the necessary and accurate data needed to support the needs of stakeholders within County departments and municipalities. The primary focus will be on data manipulation, printed map development, and web map creation. The intern’s duties will include using GIS software to edit spatial and tabular data, working with ArcGIS Online for web mapping, assisting in documenting procedures and workflows, and developing printed maps and/or map books. The intern may also assist in training activities. This description is a general statement of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not include all mentioned or exclude other duties as assigned.

Purpose of Job:

The purpose of an internship is to help students or recent graduates gain practical experience, become acquainted with professionals in their field of interest, and develop an understanding of professional responsibilities and effective working relationships. Hours for interns are flexible, depending on the department’s and intern’s needs, but may not exceed 30 hours/a week.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform data entry and edits for spatial and tabular data.
  • Assist in publication and use of feature services in the web GIS environment
  • Assist in the design and creation of geodatabases based on established requirements.
  • Assist in training first responders on the use of the U.S. National Grid System and maps.
  • Produce printed and/or web-based maps for information and analysis.

Education and Experience:

Must have completed at least TWO YEARS at a college/university working towards a degree in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or comparable field of study.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with GIS software solutions including ArcGIS Online.
  • ArcGIS Pro experience
  • Understanding of various geospatial data types including vector and raster datasets.
  • Experience editing geospatial data.
  • Experience with attribute rules, SQL and Python desired but not required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
  • Organized. Able to prioritize and accomplish a wide variety and scale of projects.

Communication:

  • Exchanges of routine and non-routine information with staff using effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to convey GIS information to non-GIS users in a training environment.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in a stationary position in an office environment for extended periods of time.

Compensation:

  • $15.00/hour
  • Note: This position is not eligible for benefits.
