Columbia County
The Columbia County Land Information Department is seeking an Intern (480 hours) for the summer of 2025 to provide assistance in the areas of data collection and processing, scanning and archiving, and research and analysis projects in support of the general objectives of the department. This internship is designed to give a hands-on experience to college-level students who are interested in pursuing a future career in land information or GIS, while providing the department additional staff resources to accomplish necessary tasks. This position will work both independently and as a team member, under the general supervision of the Land Information Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Scan historical highway plat maps and import the digitized copy into our Land Records System (LRS). Populate necessary tax parcel and survey attribution.
2. Plot Public Land Survey System (PLSS) corner points into County’s LRS using ArcGIS.
3. Update data and cartographic elements on deliverable maps for different County departments.
4. Research historical records related to land information projects.
5. Perform other related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
1. Enrollment in post high school courses associated to land information, surveying, GIS, cartography, or related field.
2. Knowledge of Windows operating system, Microsoft Office, email, and Internet skills.
3. Knowledge of the County’s Enterprise GIS software (ESRI ArcMap Desktop, ArcGIS Pro,Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and ArcGIS Online).
4. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, contractors, and government officials.
5. Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
6. Ability to work independently and with minimal direction.
