The GIS Specialist provides technical support in GIS technologies to staff at the Michigan Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The position provides technical support and guidance in the use of GIS and database management tools for the management, analysis and interpretation of data on the distribution of rare species and natural communities. Creates and designs maps and other graphical products for internal and external use and for audiences with widely varying backgrounds. Work requires familiarity with related techniques for the conversion, analysis, management and graphical representation of spatial data sets derived from cartographic and tabular source material. The GIS Specialist is expected to play a leadership role in helping the chapter develop more effective conservation strategies through incorporation of GIS and data analysis, and to further the chapters work in developing effective conservation plans, monitoring, measures, and communications tools. The position will be responsible for outreach to partner organizations, agencies, and institutions to ensure the best information and data is available and integrated into chapter conservation strategies and action. This position is expected to carry significant responsibilities in working with GIS to link Michigans priorities and measurements of success across different spatial units and scales to the Conservancys efforts to develop worldwide ten-year conservation goals.
