The Fire GIS Analyst works with the Forestry Division’s GIS Specialist located within the Bureau of Forest Services. The position leads the Bureau of Forest Protection’s GIS projects. These projects include mapping of the Wildland-Urban Interface areas by performing a GIS overlay analysis using existing data sets; this project includes the establishment of a baseline map that provides visual information for community assessments and recommendations regarding wildfire protection and risk-reduction priorities. The position works with federal, state, and local fire control agencies to obtain a thorough catalog of fire occurrence and protection capability information. The Fire GIS Analyst will expand the Bureau of Forest Protection’s structure zone mapping project, including gathering GIS data layers, assisting program and field staff by setting standards for Structure Zone Mapping. The position provides technical advice to staff on field data collection techniques with GPS units and represents the Bureau of Forest Protection on the Aerial Photo Team. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required: Education and experience in GIS / Remote Sensing work in forest or natural resources management is required. Working knowledge of Wisconsin Land Information, emergency management, Wisconsin Land Cover, and census housing data also desirable. Experience developing and managing multiple complex projects is preferred. GPS functionality, operation, and appropriate applications of the using Garmin and Trimble GPS units including Pathfinder Office software are required. Remote sensing skills including digital imaging, ground control and aerial photography use in natural resources is recommended. Development and management of natural resource information systems including, field data collection (e.g. field computers and GPS), complex GIS / RS modeling pertaining to natural resource or forestry applications is required. Good organizational, written and oral communication skills are required. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively in teams with a diverse group of customers and independently.
