The City of Sun Prairie is seeking a part time hourly employee to assist with GIS data development, ongoing maintenance, and data conversions.

The City is creating many new data sets for its growing enterprise GIS. Meanwhile the City staff is preparing to migrate to a geodatabase format on ESRI ArcSDE. Hands-on exposure to many facets of GIS in a municipal government setting, including geodatabase development and ArcSDE implementation, is assured to the successful candidate.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiar with metadata standards.
  • Experience using relational databases – e.g. Microsoft Access and/or SQL Server.
  • Understanding of concepts such as projections, datums, coordinate systems, and database relationships.
  • Familiarity with GPS units and primary data collection in the field.
  • Experience with AutoCAD systems and file conversion to ESRI formats.
  • Geodatabase experience.
  • Requirements:

  • Fluent with ArcGIS (proven experience in ArcInfo and ArcCatalog).
  • Attention to detail and accuracy when editing GIS data.
  • Be able to work a few hours per work (hours may be flexible, some may be outside the standard work day/week).
  • Be available through May 2005 (with possible longer term employment).
  • Possess excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Work well independently.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
  • A criminal background check is required prior to an employment offer.
  • Responsibilities:

    1) Reproject, convert, edit, or create geographic data sets as necessary using ArcMap, ArcINFO, and/or Map Info.

    2) Assure GIS spatial and attribute quality control.

    3) Support development of ESRI Geodatabases. Assist with migration process from coverages and shape files.

    4) Frequent communication and documentation of progress will be required.

    Wages:

    Pay rate will be $10 – 11/hour depending on skills and experience. Benefits not included.

    Timelines:

    1. Applications will be accepted until hire is made.

    2. Interviews will tentatively take place during the week of Nov. 22ndth, or as soon as possible.

    3. Anticipated start date is ASAP.
