Job Description:
This is a half-time position (20 hrs/week). The position assists Natural Heritage Inventory (NHI) staff in performing a variety of data management tasks. Job duties include: 35% – Interpret contemporary and historical records of Wisconsin’s rare species and natural communities from a variety of sources and transcribe these records onto electronic forms. 30% – Represent transcribed biological and physical description information onto GIS maps and enter transcribed and mapped information into computer databases. 20% – Assist NHI staff in a variety of tasks related to organizing, processing, and maintaining data; complete database development tasks and other special projects as assigned. 15% – Develop data summaries and products including GIS maps to assist with inventory and conservation efforts.

Knowledge Required:
1. Knowledge of Wisconsin’s biological communities and landscape. Background in botany, zoology, ecology, or other related biological science. 2. Planning, coordinating, and problem-solving skills, including ability to work with others in a team setting. 3. Proficiency in reading and interpreting a variety of map formats, especially 7.5′ topographic quadrangle maps and aerial photographs. Familiarity with mapping techniques at various scales. 4. Experience with microcomputers, especially database (Microsoft Access), GIS (ArcView), and word-processing (Word) software 5. Ability to synthesize information on rare species and to apply it to spatial representations of populations. 6. Attention to detail and ability to effectively organize projects, data, files, and work assignments. 7. Effective oral and written communication skills.
