The person in this position works as a geographic information systems (GIS) specialist with the Department of Forest Ecology and Management to provide technical support for the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (IANST) under the auspices of a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service Midwest Region GIS Technical Support Center. The working title of this position is GIS-Specialist.

Duties include:
40% Develop and maintain an integrated and organized GIS data system for the IANST. This includes preparing data bases using existing data, and locating and/or acquiring additional data where gaps in the data exist. These data must be entered into existing databases using procedures that ensure data integrity and that comply with National Park Service (NPS) standards. The incumbent also will manage and monitor data bases to ensure that all electronic and digital files are organized for proper protection, access, distribution and use.

25% Obtain geospatial information from trail partners, state agencies, and county land information officers through existing data sharing agreements, and integrate these data into forms useful for routine trail management activities as required/identified by the Trail Manager and Ice Age Trail Office. The incumbent also will collect global positioning system (GPS) information using simple GPS equipment along designated segments of the IANST for use in an existing ‘data dictionary.’

25% Assist with preparation of materials in support of public involvement in the IANST planning process and the development of possible route options for the trail. The incumbent will prepare summary reports related to economic benefits and surveys of demographic metrics to help the public understand the goals of the NPS in managing the IANST. This position also supports land protection and acquisition efforts by creating products to be used by researchers, trail staff, landowner meetings, field surveys for eventual land acquisition recommendations.

10% Participate in developing data-related policies, standards, guidelines, and manuals. Consultation with faculty researchers on campus may be required. The candidate will provide comprehensive status reports to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail Management and the Regional GIS Coordinator.
