Degree and area of specialization:

B.A./B.S. required. Degree in computer science or related field preferred, skills in computer systems management essential.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least one year of experience with demonstrated proficiency in database programming, managing a heterogeneous computer network with machines usisng Windows, Macintosh, and LInux operating systems, website design and maintenance, and experience with a variety of software.

Principal duties:

The primary responsibility of the position is to meet core information technology needs of the Department of Botany?s faculty, research and instructional staff and students. The individual filling the position is expected to perform the following:

1) Maintain network security and provide reliable data backups.
2) Assess department server, data storage, and networking needs. Advise and lead the department in upgrading equipment.
3) Support the computer and web-based instructional activities/needs of the department.
4) Develop and maintain research databases including, those containing GIS data and the databases of the Wisconsin State Herbarium. Develop and maintain other departmental databases as necessary. Assist faculty, staff, grad assistants and students in using these databases.
5. Maintain departmental, herbarium, greenhouse, and instructional course web pages and assist faculty and staff in creating and/or maintaining research-related web pages.
6. Assist with the set up and configuring of new computer equipment and peripherals.
7. Serve as the departmental liaison to DoIT and other university computing systems groups and represent the department’s computing interests on departmental or university-wide committees.
8. Serve as the departmental trouble-shooter to solve hardware and software problems and provide assistance in obtaining aid from other campus resources.
9. Respond to the evolving information technology needs of the department and help to educate faculty and staff on effective information technology use.
