The GIS Specialist will organize and manage an extensive spatial database. The specialist will also be responsible for documenting metadata and creating maps.

55% Acquire and process spatial data. This consists of extracting and organizing information for multiple study areas, manipulation of datasets (raster and vector) to generate new information, and using GIS software to assess datasets to determine if they are appropriate and applicable to ongoing projects.

35% This position will be responsible for (in conjunction with other staff) designing, implementing, populating, and maintaining a data server using ESRI ArcSDE or equivalent spatial data management software.

5% Create publication quality maps using ESRI ArGIS or other software. This will require the use of GIS software and/or graphic utilities. The position will be responsible for acquiring spatial data from commercial vendors and other sources on an ad hoc basis.

5% Document metadata for new and existing datasets. This involves using ESRI ArcCatalog or other software for recording FGDC compliant metadata about new and existing data.
