An Application of GIS in Environmental and Social Sciences

A 50% project assistant is needed for a study investigating the factors that influence conservation decisions by farmers and rural land mangers. The project will develop new tools for designing effective education, outreach, and incentive programs for watershed management. These new tools will emphasize targeting based on environmental and social factors.

The project assistant will be working primarily on the spatial component of the study. While Prof. Asli Gocmen at the Urban and Regional Planning Department will oversee the majority of the work, the assistant will also with Prof. Ken Genskow in Urban and Regional Planning, Rebecca Power at the Environmental Resources Center, and other members of a multi-state team. The assistant will have a 50 % appointment (with tuition waiver, monthly stipend, and benefits) for Spring 2007 with the potential for continued funding. Desired qualifications for this position include advanced knowledge of GIS (specifically ArcGIS) and knowledge of environmental sciences and modeling for watershed management.

The tasks for the first phase (Spring 07) of this position consist of gathering and developing appropriate GIS layers, and an analysis of these layers to determine environmentally sensitive areas in three watersheds in the Midwest. The PA would also lay the groundwork for future tasks related to an overlay of social and behavioral characteristics in the environmentally sensitive areas, modeling of the relationship between the human dimension and physical setting, and the creation of interactive mapping for an educational effort.

To apply for this position, please submit a resume and a cover letter explaining your qualifications for this position (e.g., background in environmental sciences, watershed management, GIS / spatial analysis; and experience with ArcGIS, remote sensing, ArcIMS, and environmental and spatial modeling). If you do not possess several of the skills mentioned (e.g., ArcIMS) you are still encouraged to apply for this position.
