The City of Ashland, Dept. of Public Works – Engineering Division will be accepting applications for the following Limited Term Employee. The position will be under the supervision and direction of the Geographic Information System (GIS) Coordinator, with second-line supervision by the Civil/GIS Technician.
The GIS Intern will assist the GIS Coordinator & Civil/GIS Technician with the following (listing may not be comprehensive):
-Collection, post-processing/correction, and conversion to GIS of physical infrastructure features of the City using Trimble GeoXH global positioning system (GPS) and Zephyr antenna technology, ESRI ArcPad 9 Application Builder and/or ESRI ArcPad 9, and Trimble GPS Analyst for ArcGIS extension software.
-Development and creation of GIS data layers for the City using ESRI ArcGIS 9.X ArcInfo software, including data development and entry and creation of tables.
-Conversion of AutoDesk Civil 3D 2007 computer-aided design (CAD) as-built drawings to GIS for the City.
-Creation of metadata for GIS data layers, as well as digital and paper record-keeping and filing.
-Research of data sources and information; conduct data quality-assurance / quality-control using standardized procedures.
-Create maps and exhibits as needed by City departments, partners, and the public.
Qualifications: Applicants should be interested in exploring a career in GIS, geography, water resources, or a related field. In particular, applicants should possess an interest in municipal infrastructure, municipal water, wastewater and storm water systems, and/or GIS and mapping; be skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel; be detail-oriented; and possess strong oral and written communication skills.
