The City of Whitewater is currently accepting applications for a GIS Intern position in the Public Works Streets & Forestry Department for the 2007 summer season. This person will be responsible for GIS data collection of the City’s Terrace Trees and City Signs using the Trimble GeoXH global positioning unit as well as development, ongoing maintenance, and data conversions as directed by the GIS Coordinator.
The GIS Intern may also assist the GIS Coordinator with the following (listing may not be comprehensive):
-Collection, post-processing/correction, and conversion to GIS of physical infrastructure features of the City using Trimble GeoXH global positioning system (GPS).
-Create maps and exhibits as needed by City departments, partners, and the public.
-Frequent communication and documentation of progress will be required.
-Assist with updating the City’s spatial data sets.
Qualifications:
-Candidates should be enrolled in an associate’s, bachelors ormaster’s degree in geography, forestry, urban planning, civil engineering or similar program. Alternatively, the candidate may hold one of these degrees.
-Knowledge of trees in southeastern Wisconsin a plus.
-Candidates should have demonstrated experience with ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 software. Also, candidates should be familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word and Access.
-Experience with the following is a plus: GPS Unit, Geodatabase experience, and experience with AutoCAD systems and file conversion to ESRI formats.
-Skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel; be detail-oriented; and possess strong oral and written communication skills.
-Candidates must be reliable and able to work independently.
-Have excellent organizational skills.
-Have the ability to problem solve in the field with common sense and efficiency.
