Position Summary:
This six month, full time position is funded through the Americorps Program and will be hosted by the Wisconsin Chapter of The Nature Conservancy in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The successful candidate will be fully exposed to the chapter’s programs and staff, providing vast exposure to a wide variety of aspects of The Nature Conservancy. S/he will work as a Stewardship Assistant focusing on management of State Natural Areas and associated lands. The successful candidate will work on a wide variety of land management activities including invasive species control, reforestation, prescribed burning, boundary posting, preserve maintenance, rare species monitoring, and easement monitoring. S/he will also work with our dedicated and extremely knowledgeable volunteers. Opportunities for training in prescribed fire, herbicide application, chainsaw, and first aid will be provided. Additional professional opportunities will be generated and considered depending upon the specific interests of the applicant.
General Responsibilities:
The Americorps Stewardship Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator will participate in preserve operation, maintenance, and management of Nature Conservancy owned State Natural Areas and associated lands. Duties include the following:
• Control exotic plants by pulling, girdling, chainsaw, brush cutter or by using herbicides in cooperation with staff, volunteers and contractors.
• Implement invasive plant species tracking system
• Plant tree seedlings
• Participate as a crew member for the Prescribed Fire Program
• Locate and post boundaries of preserves
• Meet with contractors to provide information on projects
• Repair or install gates and fences
• Assist with conservation easement monitoring and environmental hazard assessments
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Support volunteers; participate in volunteer work days
• Perform office duties as assigned
• Complete and submit all necessary AmeriCorps Program paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
• Attend and complete all AmeriCorps Program training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
• Wear an appropriate AmeriCorps identifier and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
