Description:
This position is located on the National Standards and Support Team, Branch of Mapping and Resource Support, Division of Habitat and Resource Conservation, AD — Fisheries and Habitat Conservation (FHC), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). The position is co-located with the U.S. Geological Survey Office of Water Information in Madison, Wisconsin. The responsibilities of the NSST are the development and application of all digital data functions relating to the Service’s wetlands maps and associated habitat data holdings. This includes developing and supporting technology infrastructure, support, operations, standards, specifications, and protocols. Ensuring product quality and modernizing components that will improve data integrity and quality is a priority for this Team. It provides the opportunity to develop functions to more fully automate quality control reviews, and produce product assessment tools and analyses to support the Regions and Washington Office. Responsibilities are national in scope as the Team will assist the Division in applying the latest map preparation theories and techniques, including traditional thematic mapping, computer and web based mapping, computer graphics, and database design and support. The Team is a testing ground for emerging technologies and their application in digital geographic information management and operations.

Major Duties:

  1. Data Analysis and Support: Performs analysis of tabular, graphic or geospatial information to generate status information, and technical report materials. Assists in the development of geospatial analysis tools, modeling and image processing.
  2. Data Assessment Validation: Performs data assessment and validation using established criteria. Writes brief reports that include summarized data assessments and descriptions. Assists with documentation of operational methods, develops user instructions, and provides technical assistance to project personnel. Provides assistance in field verification of wetland information.
  3. Data Discovery: Performs ecological and geographic data discovery using Internet and other web-based technologies using innovative search and discovery techniques. Contacts external sources to determine the availability of geospatial data or imagery. Working with higher graded specialists, conducts varied tests and makes data suitability determinations based on extensive evaluations and discussions of data criteria pertaining to the best spatial and temporal resolutions and availability that will support Team operations.
  4. Data Integration/Visualization/Presentation: Builds, maintains, and edits/modifies/integrates digital data, applications, databases, and metadata; assists higher grade specialists in preparing presentation, briefing, and training materials.
  5. Data Management: Populates and maintains spatial and non-spatial geographic information databases, data inventories consistent with accepted spatial and relational database applications. Builds metadata files and insures that data is consistent with existing database contents. Provides document and data scanning support. Operates Geographic Information Systems (GlS) and cartographic equipment and peripherals.
