GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
These job functions report to the Systems and Programming Manager or a designated Team leader and will work as part of an integrated application development team, with general supervision. Much of these positions focus will be on writing programs in various technologies and languages to integrate a wide variety of applications. These positions will also provide software support for those applications.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General: Job duties may include: Work with project leaders and customers to define requirements for applications, analyze and translate those into design specifications. Perform software design, construction, testing, and analyze impact of functional changes to systems. Research and evaluate application problems on production systems. Programmers must possess advanced technical skills, including knowledge of multiple programming languages. As new technologies emerge that impact our systems programmers are expected to learn and resolve any problems involved in integrating them within our systems. They will provide advice, training and technical support for various projects, and prepare documentation and standards. Actively participate on internal teams to improve departmental programs and services. Insure designs are compatible and in alignment with the practices and goals of the department and the city. Perform related work as assigned. Web Programmer: The Web Programmer, under the supervision of the Systems and Programming Manager or a designated team leader, will work in a team environment to develop web-based applications for the City of Madison Internet & Intranet websites. GIS Programmer: The GIS Programmer, under the supervision of the Systems and Programming Manager or a designated team leader, will work in a team environment to develop web-based GIS applications & services, custom client viewers, & Internet map services in support of a wide variety of GIS projects using ArcGIS Server software. Additional responsibilities include building custom components with ArcObjects and/or the .NET programming framework to extend the functionality of ESRI ArcGIS products. The GIS Programmer will also contribute to geodatabase design, spatial data management, and GIS analysis work.
